Yesterday we sanded our plywood and applied a light coat of linseed oil to aide in a smoother finish for our rammed earth walls and to release from the wall easily.  Wanwei and Carly bent rebar for the structure in the walls, and formwork began to come together.

We began to lift formwork into place and secure it to the concrete stem walls.  This was an intense process and we have been very lucky to have the guidance and expertise of Brad and Roger from Earth Wall Builders.  Their experience in forming rammed earth walls has brought ease with this learning process, and Brad has been teaching us about the terminology and best methods for rammed earth.

It was a team effort as we lifted the forms up and into place.  Then we had to hold the structures in place as we clamped and screwed our formworks to each other.  After a bout of shimmying and hitting things with hammers, the formworks were in place and strong as can be.

Another half day of formwork and we’ll be ready to start ramming earth!
