A lesson plan built with significant care

By Dennis Caulfield

From the beginning of the DesignBuildBLUFF program, he has lent his considerably experienced (30+ years) hands and mind to building projects built with as much heart and kindness as wood, glass, steel and concrete.

The following is his perspective on the importance of projects being built for the students, clients and the community at large.

Q: What prepared you for your role at DesignBuildBLUFF?

A: I like to teach. I have a degree in education as well as over 30 years of building experience, working as a carpenter and contractor. I also served as construction manager for the Salt Lake Valley Habitat for Humanity.

Q: What are some of the practical benefits of the program?

A: Many architects lack building knowledge…how stuff gets built…the process. So they design elements of buildings that create problems during construction. We let students try different ideas, but learning from failure is great experience.

Q: What is the biggest challenge students face?

A: Translating an idea from blueprint to the real world is a difficult process. Organization is key. Knowing all the details…like having hammers, ladders and the right tools… is vital, as is cooperation with the craftsman and other team members. I think the students learn not to take anything for granted.

Q: What is unique about the projects?

A: Designing and building affordable housing that is also architecturally significant is hard. We help members of the design and build team to understand the consequences of their decisions. Understanding the needs…from a practical and cultural perspective…of each client is also a great learning experience. Trade-offs and comprises have to be made. But that is reality.

Q: What do you most enjoy about the experience?

A: We have an amazing impact on people’s lives. It goes beyond hope. I feel fortunate to be involved. It’s a great experience…tons of energy, idealism. It’s a unique program.
