no break for bluff

field trip

checking out the scrap pile

With Winter Break underway, the Bluff crew is trying to keep the work going in preparation for construction in January.

After our last visit to Bluff in November, we started tweaking the floor plan and combining aspects of the other designs to make a home that Janet will truly enjoy. Straw bale construction, sliding barn doors in the interior and a shutter system are being integrated into the plans. The main construction components from the original design was a radiant heat concrete foundation, SIP panels for the wall system and possible roof system, and a series of rafters on the house and studio that extends into the north shade house.

Before break commenced we were able to go on a couple local fieldtrips

We met with Big-D Construction Corp to discuss our ideas and how they can help us build the project. Big D has a history of being extremely generous to DDB and we are appreciative of their financial help and expertise. We talked about using reclaimed lumber for rafters and the possibility of using SIP panels on our site. It was the first of many discussions on materials, construction tips and schedule and budgets for the upcoming semester.

fun at Bish's

Last week we began to look for materials from local Salt Lake City companies. We checked out the Bish steel fabrication scrap bin and then headed to 3 form material solutions where we met with Derrick who had been putting aside materials for us to use for a couple months. It was neat to see the variety of panels they had to offer and I think all of us walked away with some great ideas for interior finishes.

For now, I think we are all hoping our stockings will be full of new tools, just as our in-boxes are already full of bluff emails, all in preparation for January 10th.
